[The file's been in Apollo's hands for a few days now, and he still has no idea what he's supposed to do. He'd mistakenly grabbed it while cleaning up the office (hey, someone has to do it, if Mr. Wright won't), only to realize it contained the details of the Misham case. Details his boss hadn't shared with him. It had stung a little at first; Apollo had thought Kristoph's deeds catching up to him would mean the end of all the secrecy, but apparently he'd been wrong. Then, the dismay had quickly turned into confusion.
Thalassa Gramarye, the note clipped to the photo reads. Sure, she's beautiful, and Apollo can even see the resemblance between her and Trucy if he looks for it, but that isn't what catches his attention whenever he sees the picture. The bracelets are an exact match for his, and Apollo can scarcely believe what that might mean. Though there are million questions clamoring in his mind for answers (Does Mr. Wright know anything about this? Why didn't he say anything?), Apollo turns his thoughts to the one person he knows he should be talking to about this--Trucy. Much as he wants to get Clay's opinion on the whole thing, Apollo balks at sharing the information with anyone else. It feels...wrong, somehow.]
Are you busy today? [Apollo deletes his half-written texts about six times before he finally sends the short question over. Not for the first time, he's grateful to have text as a buffer against Trucy's keen eyesight for a little while longer. It's been hard enough avoiding her suspicion since he found the file. Now, all he can do is wait for her to reply.]
[ Apollo has been acting strangely these days... at least, in her opinion. He's been much quieter than usual, and he's been avoiding her. At first, she'd brushed it off as a guy thing, but as the days went on, it was starting to become a little more than concerning. She's just saying goodbye to her father when she feels her phone vibrate in her backpack, and she quickly takes it out and scans over the message.
No hello, not a single how are you?... just Are you busy today?. Now her thoughts are shifting to the possibilities -- perhaps he's angry with her, and that's why he's been acting so odd. She can't think of a single thing that she's done wrong enough to upset him in such a way, though. She'd even gone to the trouble of organizing all of his files in alphabetical order just the other day, and still no reaction. This text almost makes her nervous.
How to reply... she shuts the apartment door quietly and begins to walk down the sidewalk slowly. ]
No, I'm free. What's up? Is everything okay? [ That's the reply he'll be getting. She's hoping he's alright, of course -- but she's just got a nagging feeling she can't get rid of, and her thoughts are being tugged in every which direction. There's a pause, before she quickly sends off a second text. ]
[Apollo spends a good minute staring at the words on the screen, mentally crossing off a few places in his mind. The office is out of the question, simply because Mr. Wright is there. Though his opinion of the man's risen again since working at the agency, there's still some shiftiness leftover in Mr. Wright that Apollo doesn't immediately trust, even if it is understandable after the last seven years.]
I'd like that. [That much isn't a lie, at least. Whatever hidden connection there might be between him and Trucy, there's no mistaking that she's had his back since day one. There's also no mistaking the worried tone of her first text. Guilt wells up in him, making Apollo's lips tug downward into a slight frown.]
I'm fine. [The words are reflexive, even in typed form. Apollo quickly finishes composing the rest of the message before firing it off.] Didn't mean to scare you. Do you want to meet at People Park?
[ Just the response she was hoping for -- at least about the hanging out part. The 'I'm fine' is always his go to answer, whether or not something is wrong or not. She takes a few moments to type up a quick text to the manager at the Wonder Bar, telling him that she's sick and needs the day off, before typing up one for Apollo and shooting it over. ]
Okay, I'm on my way! See you soon! :)
[ Once it's sent, she changes direction and starts heading towards People Park. It only takes a few minutes, and she finds herself taking a seat on a bench, awaiting Apollo's arrival. She can't help but feel somewhat nervous, though; something's a little off with him, but she just can't place what. She's about to find out, of course, and something about that thought has her shifting a little in place. This isn't like Apollo. ]
[His stomach feels like it's been twisted into knots by the time he spots the familiar shade of blue across the park. Tucking the folder more tightly against his side, Apollo reaches the bench in a few brisk strides. The uncertainty in his expression is only one sign of several that something's wrong, no matter how hard he's trying to be casual.]
Thanks for coming. [The relieved words escape him before he can reconsider. His brows furrow even more deeply as he considers the time on his phone, before slipping it back into his pocket.] If you haven't eaten yet, we can go somewhere after we...talk. [Wincing, Apollo tries not to think about how suspicious that had sounded.]
[ Trucy quickly looks up from her phone when she hears footsteps approaching, and smiles brightly at Apollo, even if his own expression is a little iffy. Her poker face game is strong, though, and so she keeps her smile in place, scooting over and patting the bench to offer him a seat next to her. ]
No problem, Polly! [ Oh, that didn't sound suspicious, no. It sounds worrisome, and so her smile finally falls just slightly because now she's not so sure. It slips just momentarily, however -- she's not going to start prematurely worrying just yet. Nothing good will come out of that. ] Sure, I'd like that! I haven't had time to eat at all today, I've been stuck with a lot of homework. And essays... and tests...
[ ...It's the end of the school year, and unlike poor Apollo she has been slammed with work almost constantly, even if it's not of the legal variety. Maybe that's what this is about, maybe her father has sent him to scold her for not trying hard enough. ]
You haven't eaten all day? [After a brief pause to check if he's financially in the clear for the rest of the month, Apollo offers:] My treat. As long as it's not noodles. [No offense to Eldoon, but his stomach can only take so much of the salty broth in a week. Besides, after the bomb he's about to drop on her (if what he suspects is true), Apollo figures he should try to make it up to her somehow.
Gingerly lowering himself onto the bench beside her, Apollo brings the folder forward. His hand lingers on the photo of Thalassa before he hands it over to Trucy without fanfare. Maybe it's because there's been too much excitement in their lives recently, but he'd prefer to keep this as simple as possible.]
Have you seen this picture before? [His brown eyes watch her carefully, even as they remain guarded themselves.]
Nope, haven't had a chance. Between homework and helping daddy pack for his trip to Europe, I just haven't had the time. [ She heaves an overly dramatic sigh, before blinking when he actually offers to pay. Okay, now she knows something is up. ] Thanks, Polly! Alright, alright, no noodles!
[ She giggles at the thought of her poor friend trying to gag down another bowl of delicious noodles, before she hums and takes the picture he's handed to her. She stares blankly down at it for a few moments, and while she's still smiling, her facial features soften. Oh, of course she knows who this is, even if her memories of her mother are a little fuzzy. ]
Mm, no, I don't think I've seen this particular picture... where did you find it? [ She clearly isn't looking at the bracelets, not yet at least. She's too busy trying to recall if she'd ever seen the photo before, or if she'd been around when it was taken. She's about to say something else, when her eye catches something at the bottom of the photo in question; golden and very familiar around the woman's wrists, they're bracelets.
The look on her face suddenly changes once again, and she looks up at Apollo for a brief moment, before back down at the picture. ]
...I don't understand. [ Her words come out very slowly and very quietly as she tries to make sense of this. She keeps scanning the picture over and over, before finally she looks up at Apollo again, and then down to his own bracelet. ] I don't... how?
[The recognition, he expects. It is her mother, after all. It's the shock that comes after that he's looking for. Apollo holds back his commentary for the moment. A few seconds later, he sees the exact moment that her expression shifts, knowing she's finally caught on.]
Honestly? I'm not sure, either. [As he exhales quietly, his gaze drops down to the picture again.] I found this file of the Misham case in the office when I was cleaning up. This picture was in there--along with this. [With a bit more reluctance, Apollo rifles through the papers until he finds Thalassa's profile, then hands that over to Trucy, too. The notes on her status as a Gramaye, her marriage to Zak, her fateful accident are all expected. The few lines about her first marriage and the possibility of another child are not.
While she's reading, Apollo clears his throat and nervously turns his bracelet on his wrist.] Did I ever tell you how I got this bracelet?
[ She tears her gaze away from his bracelet to stare up at him once more, listening to him speak. She's more than a little shocked, to say the least. She very carefully takes the paper as he hands it over, allowing her eyes to drop and read over the lettering. She pours over each word, and reads the document again and again, trying to make some kind of sense of this. But there's really no sense to make of it... possibility of another child, no one had ever mentioned that to her before.
It's starting to come together, piece by piece. The bracelet, the odd powers they both possess... she'd even heard, at one point, someone on the street stating that they looked alike, but at the time she'd taken it simply as they were making the same expression. Now she's not so sure about that. ]
No, you didn't... how did you get it, Polly? [ Her voice is soft, and she's still reading the document repeatedly, along with looking at the picture on occasion. She shifts a little, settling both things down onto her lap finally so that she can properly pay attention to his story. ]
I was in a group home for as long as I remember. [Though his voice is softer than Trucy might be used to, his tone remains matter-of-fact. It's not pity he's looking for in telling her this, not when he's proud that he's able to make it on his own now.] They kept the bracelet for me until I was older, and said my mom had left it for me when she gave me up. I've worn it since then. [Apollo gives a small shrug, like he's embarrassed by the sentimentality.]
A-anyway, you know it helps me see when someone's lying. I don't think there's a lot of these things around.
[He catches her gaze now, curiosity and unease warring inside him.] Did your dad--er, Zak, not Mr. Wright--ever say anything? It can't be a coincidence that I have the same bracelet as your mom, and we have the same ability...right?
[On the one hand, he wouldn't mind having Trucy as family. On the other, he's been on his own for so long that he isn't sure how to feel about the whole thing.]
... [ She'd kind of figured, but just hearing it makes her heart hurt. That's the fate she would have faced, too, had Phoenix not stepped up. No one in her family had wanted her, and even after her mother's accident, no one had really been there for her much, not even Zak. Something about his story makes guilt well up inside her chest, but she hides it well. ] I see. I'm sorry you had to deal with that.
[ He may not be looking for sympathy, but she feels that an apology is necessary regardless. This is a subject she'd never dreamed of having to talk about with Apollo, and yet here they are, talking it out. ] No, something tells me there's... maybe just a few. Or two.
[ She gestures back to the picture of Thalassa and the one bracelet she's wearing, and then his. This is so surreal, this sudden possibility that both Apollo and the documents are hinting at, that it's making her head swim. When he looks her in the eye, she shakes her head. She's sincere and has absolutely no reason to lie about this, after all. ]
No... unless he said something to daddy the night Mr. Gavin killed him. But never to me. [ Her fingers, still wrapped around the papers in her lap, squeeze them unconsciously. She can't help the slight feeling of anxiety that's flowing through her. ] No, I don't think it's a coincidence at all... and I don't exactly think it's a coincidence that we met, either. Daddy's not a stupid man, I'm sure he's... had some kind of knowledge about this.
[ ...Why it was kept from them is whole new can of worms, though. Finally, she looks away from him and up at the sky. She's very quiet for a few moments as she focuses on the clouds and their shapes, trying to gather her thoughts and honestly the courage to say the next few words. ] We could always ask Detective Skye for a DNA test.
It's in the past. [Apollo tells her decisively, not wanting to linger on the darker points of his life when there's something else to focus on--Trucy, specifically..
It's funny that Trucy mentioned Mr. Wright in that context just now, he thinks. One thing's become clear to him since teaming up with her: she's much more perceptive than most people would give her credit for. She would have to be, to pinpoint exactly what bothered Apollo about the whole thing.] I don't know how much Mr. Wright knows, but I want to keep this between us for now...if you're okay with that. Going to Ema is a good idea, though.
[Part of him just wants to know the facts before they decide to confront him in the future. Apollo nudges at her shoulder, glancing over at her.] You okay? I know it's a lot to take in.
[ The day started out like any other -- especially now that it's summer. Trucy's slept in late today, after studying for exams and projects thrown at her left and right, she's deserved a break like this. ESPECIALLY with her dad gone yet again on another 'super secret mission' that isn't that super secret to her, at least. She's heard him on the phone with Edgeworth, after all.
It's late afternoon at this point, and she's finally up and about. She's in the office still, of course, but in the little room she's designated as her 'bedroom' of sorts. She's been busy practicing various tricks here and there, namely the more dangerous ones she knows her dad wouldn't be happy to find out about. Today, it's throwing knives.
She's set up a large piece of wood, so not to ruin the wall of course, and she's been busily throwing her knives at it. Some stick, others don't... it's frustrating. But practice makes perfect, and she's not going to let this get the best of her. She picks up the knives to try again; a knife is hurled as hard as she can at the board, except this time it sets off a chain reaction of sorts -- it rebounds off of a knife she couldn't get un-stuck from said board with a soft clink, and it happens so fast Trucy has no time to react when it flies right back at her and cuts directly across the top of her left arm.
She's not even sure what happened at first, not until she feels a sudden searing pain coming from her arm and something very wet and warm rolling down her skin. Looking at the damage, she has to cringe a little -- it's deep, and she's pretty sure she's never bled quite this much in her entire life. Initially, panic sets in, as she quickly uses a hand to try and keep the blood from hitting the carpet.
She's not sure if Apollo is still in the office or not -- she's hoping not, because he's going to freak, she's afraid -- but she has no choice but to try and get to the bathroom to get some water on this wound, and to use the mirror to further look at it. She's not sure if she'll need to go to the hospital or not, either.
Slowly, she slides out of her room and down the stairs, wincing every time a drop of blood hits the ground. At least it's not carpeted anymore. She tip toes to the bottom and glances around, before trying to casually slide into the bathroom. The door shuts with a soft click, and she leans over the sink as she removes her hand from the wound, paling as an entire handful of blood splatters onto the white porcelain. ]
[After working with the Wrights for the better part of a year, Apollo's learned not to disturb Trucy while she's fiddling with her magic props. He has no desire to be roped into helping out and then possibly forced into some glittery outfit he'd rather not be seen in. Halfway through filling out some report, Apollo can't help but notice how quiet it is. Not that he's complaining, but Trucy's never so quiet when she's practicing. Frankly, the longer the silence drags on, the more nervous Apollo's becoming.
Finally, he pushes his chair back, curiosity (and worry) getting the better of him.]
Trucy? [Apollo frowns when he doesn't get a reply immediately, venturing further into the hallway. That's when he notices the blood on the hardwood floor. He inhales sharply, the alarm hitting him full force.]
Trucy?! [This time he doesn't bother to keep his voice down.]
[ Busted. She can hear the panic in her older brother's voice when he calls for her, and she looks around frantically, trying to figure out how to make this look... well, not as bad as it probably is. She quickly grabs the towel from where it's hanging up and wraps it around her arm, as though the blood isn't going to soak through, as if the sink and the bathroom floor don't look like a massacre already. ]
I'm in the bathroom, Polly--
[ She opens the door enough to poke her head out, flashing him a nervous grin. ]
No worries, I'm okay! I just cut myself a little. I'm fine!
[ She's doing her best to keep the soaked through towel out of his line of sight, and to keep her grin in place, but this really hurts and she's kind of panicking, too. Just a little. ]
[Yeah, that's not suspicious at all. Apollo practically zooms over to the bathroom as soon as he hears her voice, he's never moved so quickly in his life. Though he doesn't try to push the door open, he does eye her suspiciously, both hands propped on his hips.]
A little? You were bleeding all over the floor!
[His hand presses against the door lightly, his eyes boring into hers.] Let me see.
[ This isn't good. She laughs nervously again, waving a hand at him. Unfortunately, the soaked through towel hits the floor because she's let it go. She looks over her shoulder, staring down at it blankly for a moment. ]
It's not that bad-- [ She's straining to keep the wound from his view as she tries to retrieve the towel... this is stupid, though, because he's going to find out anyways. So, with a defeated sigh, she relents. ]
...Okay. Don't freak out, okay? [ Stepping back, she opens the door to let him see the full extent of the damage. There's a guilty look on her face suddenly, because she doesn't want to worry him. ]
[As if Apollo's stress levels weren't already high enough, the combination of the blood-soaked towel and the splattered bathroom tiles definitely make him freeze, mind going blank.]
Oh my God. [He says weakly, face pale. The rational part of him that knows how to handle injuries is quickly drowned out by his panic.
It's ridiculous. As an attorney, he's seen his fair share of blood at the crime scenes. ...but those victims were never part of his family, not like Trucy is.]
...Are you okay? [ She's staring at poor Apollo, suddenly feeling extremely concerned for the poor young attorney. He doesn't look so good suddenly.
She casually turns the faucet on and splashes water on the wound, hiding her INSANE NEED to cringe because it stings, but she thinks that if there's not as much blood, he'll feel better. ]
You should go sit down, Polly... do you want me to get you some water?
[Get a grip, Justice. Once Apollo shakes off the panic, the mortification starts to set in, as does the redness in his face. It isn't the time for that, though, not with Trucy being injured like this.]
I'm fine. You're the one who needs looking after here, Trucy. [Apollo firmly waves aside her concern, stepping closer to examine the cut. He's careful not to jostle her arm too much.]
Stay here. I'll get the first aid kit. [Worry quickens his steps, and he's back with the supplies in record time. But first--he hands her a fresh towel to press to the injury.]
But it's not that bad-- [ She quiets down and goes completely still when he examines her cut, because as careful as he is being she doesn't want to move to quickly and scree herself over in the process.
She's about to say something else, but then he's off and running to get the first aid kit. She sighs and waits like she's told, forcing another smile when he returns. She takes the old towel off of her arm and just sort of tosses it into the tub for the time being, quickly taking the fresh one from him to replace it. ]
Thanks, Polly! You're a life saver! [ She eyes the first aid kit, though, something dawning on her suddenly. ] ...We... we aren't going to use rubbing alcohol, are we?
We'll have to clean the cut, but not with alcohol. [Once Trucy's got the towel pressed to her arm, Apollo leads her to the kitchen as briskly as he can while being gentle. All the while, he frantically tries to recall the first aid lessons he'd gotten when he was younger.
He pulls out a chair for her and points at it.] Sit.
[As he searches the kit for gauze and bandages, he glances at her from the corner of his eyes.] How'd this even happen anyway?
...I don't think it needs to be cleaned, it's fine! [ Still, she walks with him into the kitchen and takes a seat as instructed. She's not really sure if she wants to proceed with this, though.
His question has her snapping back into reality, and she feels her left eye give the slightest twitch. ]
I flew too close to the sun, Polly. I was practicing with some throwing knives... I couldn't do it again if I tried, honestly. One knife hit another and ricocheted... and the next thing I knew I was bleeding.
Trust me, you won't be singing that tune if the whole thing gets infected. [Apollo's gone into "big brother mode" at this point, ignoring her complaints with ease.
Though he's in the middle of taking out the cotton swabs, he stops to stare at her incredulously.]
Throwing knives? Why do I get the feeling Mr. Wright doesn't know about this?

[ Case 2 - insert witty case name here ]
It's late afternoon at this point, and she's finally up and about.
Uh-oh...
Turnabout Meltdown of the Brother
Finally, he pushes his chair back, curiosity (and worry) getting the better of him.]
Trucy? [Apollo frowns when he doesn't get a reply immediately, venturing further into the hallway. That's when he notices the blood on the hardwood floor. He inhales sharply, the alarm hitting him full force.]
Trucy?! [This time he doesn't bother to keep his voice down.]
LMAO POOR POLLY
I'm in the bathroom, Polly--
[ She opens the door enough to poke her head out, flashing him a nervous grin. ]
No worries, I'm okay! I just cut myself a little. I'm fine!
[ She's doing her best to keep the soaked through towel out of his line of sight, and to keep her grin in place, but this really hurts and she's kind of panicking, too. Just a little. ]
smh
A little? You were bleeding all over the floor!
[His hand presses against the door lightly, his eyes boring into hers.] Let me see.
get used to it big brother
It's not that bad-- [ She's straining to keep the wound from his view as she tries to retrieve the towel... this is stupid, though, because he's going to find out anyways. So, with a defeated sigh, she relents. ]
...Okay. Don't freak out, okay? [ Stepping back, she opens the door to let him see the full extent of the damage. There's a guilty look on her face suddenly, because she doesn't want to worry him. ]
See? Not that bad!
No >:T
Oh my God. [He says weakly, face pale. The rational part of him that knows how to handle injuries is quickly drowned out by his panic.
It's ridiculous. As an attorney, he's seen his fair share of blood at the crime scenes. ...but those victims were never part of his family, not like Trucy is.]
DO IT D:<
She casually turns the faucet on and splashes water on the wound, hiding her INSANE NEED to cringe because it stings, but she thinks that if there's not as much blood, he'll feel better. ]
You should go sit down, Polly... do you want me to get you some water?
[ Honestly, he looks like he may pass out... ]
You can't make me!!
Yes I can!!!!
Nope
He pulls out a chair for her and points at it.] Sit.
[As he searches the kit for gauze and bandages, he glances at her from the corner of his eyes.] How'd this even happen anyway?
Yep.........
No............
Though he's in the middle of taking out the cotton swabs, he stops to stare at her incredulously.]
Throwing knives? Why do I get the feeling Mr. Wright doesn't know about this?
Yes.............................................
