[Tadashi lifts up the spare helmet to get to his underneath it.]

Yup. He’s in the testing stages. [He knows how unhelpful that is, it’s why he grins when he locks the helmet’s strap under his chin.] Techies are weird like that, giving pronouns to their inventions.

[Hiding that he’s lying is beneath him, which is why he’s giving a simple smile that writes it all over his face.]

Want to see him?

[Does she want to see him? Rise gives this about a second's worth of thought before making her decision.]

You bet I wanna see him.

[Thought you'd never ask, Tadashi. She is officially dying of curiosity, and it looks like seeing the healing tech is the only cure!]

Where should I meet you?

[Yes! he can finally share his invention with someone without ruining the chance to surprise his brother.]

You know where the tech institute is? There's a building called the Ito Ishioka Robotics Lab, you can't miss the sign out front. Run into any trouble and just say you're there to see Tadashi. That usually clears things up.

[Okay, now he's just bragging.]

Oh, and no food in the lab. [Why's he even smiling about that.]

I know where it is. I pass by the school sometimes.

[The campus is pretty big, but she can always ask around if she gets lost. Rise adjusts the purse strap on her shoulder.]

I have to meet with my manager right now, but I'll head over as soon as I'm done. How late will you be there?

Pretty late, probably eleven or midnight. I've been doing round the clock tests so I asked for a key to the lab.

[He gets into his seat and looks over at Rise.]

Need a lift there, is your work not that far away?

I'll be fine. His office is just a few minutes from here and he can probably drop me off at the school after we talk, too.

[She lifts her hand in a small, cheerful wave.]

I'll see you later?

Sounds good to me. I'll wait up for you.

[He returns the wave and turns on the moped, which thankfully still works.]

Nice meeting you, Rise!

[Suuuure enough, there's a knock on Tadashi's lab door about two hours later.

Rise ignores the stares she can feel on her back--probably people wondering what she's even doing here--but she does turn and wave at the student who'd pointed her in the right direction.]

[The tint on the glass door vanishes after a shadowy finger on the other sides taps it, revealing a typically cheerful Tadashi.]

Hey, wasn't sure if you were going to show. [His voice is muffled and the semi-opaque tint comes back as he opens the door.] Come on in, don't mind the mess. I was getting everything back together for another test.

[Oh, hey, that's cool. Rise gives the glass a curious look as she steps inside. He wasn't kidding about the messy part, but Rise figures it's just typical of any workshop that's being used.]

Soooo this is where you're putting together your super special tech.

[She surveys the room with some interest, wondering where the healing tech is.]

Super, not so much. Special, yeah. [He makes his way over with a slight limp to the digital display monitor to save what he’s got on it right now.]

Have a seat, enjoy the show. [Grinning, he rolls the stool over to her while dragging the chair from his desk behind him to the center.]

You didn’t get bothered by anyone, did you? [Fred’s his main concern tbh. He puts his foot up on the chair.]

[Don't mind her taking the stool for herself! She sits down primly, hands in her lap as she watches him move around.]

Nah, a couple people asked for autographs, but that's pretty normal.

Did you think there might be trouble?

No, there’s just some characters around here. Namely the school mascot.

[He rolls up his pant leg some more until the irritated abrasion’s exposed. The blood’s dried over.]

Autographs are normal? [Asked in an amused tone because Tadashi’s not sure if she’s joking or not.] I’m not even that popular around here yet.

They're normal if you're an idol.

[Rise just tosses that out there with a mental shrug. It's not like they couldn't look her up if they really wanted to.

Then she spies the injury and gasps a little.]

Oh no! Was that from earlier?

You know, I thought you looked familiar. [And he’s still trying to place her face without staring, which turns out to be difficult.]

Yup! [And now for the dumbest thing ever, Tadashi slaps the wound.] Ow!

[As soon as he says it a light beep emits from the red compartment and a white robot inflates.]

Rise, this is my medical robot, Baymax. [Of course he’s used to Baymax’s speech, thanks to so many ~~failed~~ tests.] He’s going to change healthcare for everyone. I hope.

[As soon as he’s scanned the robot’s already spraying his wound to prevent infection and putting together a bandage.]

Risette, at your service! [She gives him a very stage-y wink before turning her attention to the side, where Baymax is inflating to his full size.]

Oh, he's so cute!

[And he speaks! Though talking machines aren't exactly a new thing, the construction of this one gives him a very squishy, novel feel. Rise watches with fascination as Baymax takes care of Tadashi's injuries, then steps closer to give the nurse bot's side a poke out of curiosity.]

How long did it take you to program all this?

Thanks! I’ve designed him to be approachable. The last thing someone in poor health needs is an intimidating looking robot. But it’s been a pretty lengthy process.

Months.

[Tadashi watches with amusement and a little bit of pride as Baymax’s head swivels seamlessly to look at Rise.] I am inflatable.

It’s vinyl. The air actually has a lot of uses, but it’s mainly to keep his structure from accidentally hurting anyone.

[Once he’s done Baymax stands up straight and waddles around in place to face Rise.] Would you like a lollipop?

And he can be a bit of a candy dispenser, that’s optional.

For the kids, right? [Rise can see how a design like this one would help with the younger patients. Definitely cute and cuddly. The lollipop just cements the overall feel of him.

Rise grins and takes the offered lollipop from the nurse bot.]

Thanks! So your name's Baymax, huh? How many people have you already taken care of?

For kids of any age. [And he strategically places himself to block the the dish that holds the extra lollipops, testing out his foot for weight distribution.]

Affirmative. I have currently cared for one (1) patient with acceptable results. [After a moment:] I have just scanned you and show that you are in perfect health.

Now you see why I didn't want to go a doctor's office. This was the last test I needed to do to make sure functions properly with the medical care. Not bad, huh?

[Rise bounces a little on her feet, smiling as Baymax gives her health report.]

A performer's gotta take good care of their body, you know. At least I'm doing that part of my job right.

[Giving Baymax a pat on his squishy arm, Rise turns back to Tadashi.]

Not bad at all! I don't know anything about robotics, but this is really cool.

[and she can see how much he's put into programming it.]

Isn't it? [He's not even bragging. The whole thing is still surreal to him.] The word "ow" is what activates him, but he only deactivates when you tell him-

[And his brown eyes roll up to Baymax.] I am satisfied with my care. [And that's all it takes for the air filled marshmallow bot to get back to his unit to deflate.]

He's going to change the lives of so many people. [Tadashi grabs one of the lollipops behind him and swivels his foot by the ankle, wincing only slightly.]

You just got a sneak peek before I run the full project results by my professor.

Awww. [Rise makes a sound of disappointment as the bot deactivates. She wouldn't have minded seeing the bot around a little longer--it was cute.

And now she leans against Tadashi's desk, smiling.]

With something like that, I'm sure you'll pass with flying colors! You'll get to show Baymax off after you show the professor, right?

I really need the professor’s input on how to make him available. Robotics I can do. Manufacturing? That’s a little different. But he won’t be ready in time for the convention, so no showing him off this year.

[A patronizing nod at the little red box.] I’m sure he’ll get over it.

[He twirls the lollipop around in his fingers and sits on the extra chair.] But you’ve had experience in that kind of stuff, Ms. Idol?

Ummm not with manufacturing, if that's what you mean. But if you mean showing something off in front of a crowd, then yeah.

[She reaches over to pat Baymax's box.]

[Hold on. she just broke his mind.]

You're serious. [Wow, he feels so awesome and bad at the same time. Bad because:] What, part, of famous are you in?

[Movies, music, books? No, he'd know if she's an author.]
