Cooking mishaps!!

[In some way, it isn't surprising that Yurio ended up in Hasetsu with the rest of them after the Grand Prix Finals were over. As much as Yurio doesn't want to admit it, Yuuri figures he at least enjoyed the time he'd spent at his family's inn the first time around. He's not complaining; he's grown to like Yurio quite a lot since that first unfortunate meeting. And after the two of them took silver and gold at the Finals, Yuuri figures they can have a little fun.

He silently apologizes to him mom for the mess they're likely to make in the kitchen.]

Your grandpa gave you the recipe, right?

[Yuuri rolls his sleeves up to his elbows, adjusting his glasses as he squints at the ingredients and bowls scattered over the counter space.]

Ah, wait--! [In a panic, Yuuri steps forward, hands snapped out in an attempt to catch the eggs... that are not being thrown at all. Wow.

He stares at Yurio in disbelief.]

...you tricked me?

[His indignant face would probably be a lot more effective if he weren't trying not to laugh at the same time.]

[Yuri's just snorting, amused by his own bad sense of humor, but at least he puts the eggs down gently on the counter. There. No wasted food.]

You should've seen your face.

[The true miracle is that the angry ball of tsun possesses some sort of sense of humor.]

[Yuuri appreciates how gentle Yurio's being with the ingredients, but the still-indignant part of him doesn't want to just let Yurio get away with his little prank.

Before he can think it over rationally, Yuuri dips his fingers into the bag of flower and flicks some of the powder onto Yurio's hair. He grins.]

You should see yours now.

[Are we sure that he's 24 now...]

What the hell do you think you're doing?!

[Oh, and there's Yuri being Yuri.

He's immediately bringing his hands to his hair, trying to brush the flour out of it and mostly managing to get flour everywhere.

Good work there.

Now he's reaching for the flour, because he's a child (and at least actually the age of a child, unlike some people here.)]

Getting flour in your hair. [Yuuri replies, without even a trace of guilt--it's a miracle, to be honest.

Aaaand he's just going to pull the bag of flour closer to him. He actually needs it, okay!!]

I still need to coat the cutlets with this! Besides, you got most of it out of your hair already!

[Yeah, no, there's still an ice gremlin trying to grab that flour away.

Better be careful, the bag might break if he gets a good hold of one end.]

Oi--give it to me! I'm going to dump this whole bag on you!

[Protip: Do not give Yurio the bag of flour.]

[Fearing for the flour's safety, Yuuri scoops the bag up and lifts it above his head to keep it out of Yurio's reach.]

No way! There's still a lot left in here, we can't waste it!

[Why did he give into the urge to provoke Yurio??? He regrets everything.]

Yuri jumps for it twice and then realizes that there is absolutely 0 dignity in that and stops, clearing his throat and abruptly turning away.

Whatever. I've got food to cook, I have more important things to do than playing around.

[Uh huh.]

[That would probably be the end of it, but in his haste to keep the flour away from Yurio, Yuuri's forgotten exactly how close to the edge of the counter he is. He accidentally bumps his hip into it as he turns, making the bag tip just so.]

Ah! [Thanks to his quick reflexes, Yuuri manages to right the bag again, but that split second was all it needed to do some damage; some of the flour pours right onto Yuuri's head, making him sneeze.]

[......Ah.

The flour is a lot starker on Yuuri's black hair than it had been on Yuri's blond; he snorts softly at the white covering his hair and his face, and then the cloud of flour has him cracking up.

He can't help it, really.]

You look ridiculous.

[Flour on his face, his hair, his glasses.... someone help Yuri, he can't breathe. Sure, it's at Yuuri's expense...but at least he's laughing.]

It's not- [Whatever he's about to say, it gets lost in the flurry of sneezes that Yuuri launches into as soon as an intake of breath just has him breathing in some more flour.]

At least one of us gets to laugh. [Yuuri grumbles when he's finally done. He sighs and wipes off his glasses before shoving them back onto the bridge of his nose. The flour in his hair...he doesn't even bother with at this point.]

[He suuure does. Yuri needs a moment, wiping at his eyes and wheezing.

The flour in his hair still almost sends Yuri into another laughing fit, but he manages to hold it back.]

You look like a ghost like this.

[White powder everywhere...... incredible.]

And hey, didn't you say you didn't want to waste that? Nice job, Katsudon.

I wasn't trying to waste it.

[His protests are probably falling on deaf ears anyway, so Yuuri just sighs and sets the flour back on the counter, where it can't do any more damage.

Then he sneezes one last time.]

We should probably clean this up while the piroshki are baking.

[..."we". Who's "we".

Yuri's turning back to his own station, stacking up the bowls and utensils there, and snorts.]

I'm not helping you with that mess. I'm not the one who spilled the flour.

[It was technically Yuri's fault and yet.

Here we are.]

[But you were the one trying to grab it, Yuuri thinks, but doesn't say out loud because he's an Adult.

Instead, he just sighs quietly and offers up in that mild tone of his--]

Clean up will go a lot faster if both of us are doing it.

[..... Why should he care about that.........

Ultimately, what gets him to do it is thinking about Yuuri's mom and how kind she's been to him.

Hrmm...]

Ugh, let's just get this over with.

[Victoryyyy. Yuuri just shoots him a pleased look before turning back to his counter space and trying to figure out what step he was on before they both got distracted.]

Say, Yurio. Why'd your grandpa decide to make the katsudon piroshki?

[While Yuuri's not super familiar with Russian cuisine, he's pretty sure that's not a typical version of the stuffed bun.]

I just...brought up having it here when we were talking, and he decided to make them.

[At least...they are making progress? Conversation is happening??

Of course, he's brightening a moment later, forgetting every single last moment of aggression because GRANDPA.]

He's really talented, right?

[Don't think he's missed the fact that Yurio voluntarily brought up katsudon to his grandpa. But he looks so pleased in a way that Yuuri rarely sees, that Yuuri can't bring himself to break the moment and tease him about it.]

He is! The katsudon piroshki were as good as my mom's katsudon. [It's a high compliment coming from Yuuri. He glances at Yurio from the corner of his eye.] You two must be really close.

[Uwoh... a good compliment, well deserved by his grandfather, Yuri thinks. He nods, certain and satisfied, until Yuuri makes his observation, and then he's ducking his head.

Ah... Hrm.]

...Well, yeah. That's not weird, huh? Got a problem with it?

[Nope, still aggressive, still an asshole.

(Mostly embarrassed, though.)]

[His smile widens as he notes Yurio's reaction. If anything, Yuuri knows he made the right call, getting Yurio to talk about his grandpa instead.]

Not at all. He's your family, right? [Yuuri's tone softens.] What's he like?

[There's a lot of suspiciousness here, much like a wild animal. Yuri's just not sure what Yuuri's getting at here, or what he could possibly want.

But...

Well, he can't see any benefit Yuuri's getting out of this. Maybe he's just...asking to ask? (What a weirdo.)]

[It's just a mutter, but then he's looking away awkwardly, even as he vaguely wipes down the countertop.]

...Granpa's... [So, so important in so many ways.

He doesn't always get it, but...that sort of unconditional love and support is undeniably something special. How does he even describe that?]

Ugh, it's not like I can just describe him, just like that.

[Though he'd been prepared to let the topic go as soon as Yurio started to brush it off, he's surprised when Yurio actually tries to give him an answer. Pleasantly surprised.

Yuuri beams at him.]

I guess not. Then... [Tilting his head as he thinks.] What do you two like to do when you spend time together?

[He suspects they must like being in each other's company. He's never seen Yurio so happy about anyone before.]

[He's trying, Gramps is great and everyone should know!! That he's great!!

But he's also not very good at this.]

...S'not like we get to spend a ton of time together. He's usually in Moscow.

[St. Petersburg isn't that close.

Not--that he isn't around to support me or anything, he figures it out and shows up when he can...!

[There's probably something wrong with him, if he thinks that Yurio's odd combination of reticence and defensiveness over his grandpa is a little endearing.]

Ah, he was there at the Rostelecom Cup, wasn't he? [It would explain how Yurio had gotten a hold of the katsudon piroshki in the first place.]

I think Viktor wants me to visit Russia with him sometime soon. Maybe I can meet your grandpa while I'm there.
