Piece of the puzzle, you're my missing part

[It starts off as a normal day--well, almost normal. If it weren't for Todoroki being horribly sick and missing his classes, then it would've been just like any other day on the UA campus.

Still, his friend's been sick for quite a few days now, and Izuku can't help but worry about him. Once classes are out for the day, Izuku makes a beeline for the dorms, heading up to Todoroki's room and knocking on the door without hesitation.]

Todoroki-kun? It's me. [Hm, the door's unlocked. Izuku opens it as quietly as he can, peering at the lump on the bed when he steps inside.] Are you feeling any better?

[Shouto is at least twice as vulnerable as he looks, especially here with his alpha who doesn't want their bond. It was made when neither of them were thinking clearly.

At least part of this seems to penetrate his armor. He takes in a breath, he's still not willing to look at Midoriya yet.]

... Do you want to be my mate? [There's an edge of hope that he can't keep out of his voice.]

[It's a straightforward question, but Izuku can't do anything but freeze up in the face of it.]

I... [His throat works, and he looks away. Why is Todoroki asking him this? What Izuku wants shouldn't factor into this at all, when it should be up to Todoroki. He can't allow himself to say "yes", so he says nothing at all.]

[glaciers]

[Shouto's always been a straightforward person. The more straightforward the easier things are. At least for him.

With Midoriya who won't answer this easy yes or no question, Shouto starts getting agitated.]

How much of a mistake was this? Did you want me? Do you still want me?

[inheritance]

[Oh, no. Don't ask him that... All Izuku can do is look at Todoroki, striken. It's so hard, keeping himself from being selfish here and just telling Todoroki how he feels. That opportunity's long passed, he thinks, considering this is the second time he's screwed up so completely.]

I... [Izuku squeezes his eyes shut, struggling to get the painful words out. He knows it isn't fair, pushing Todoroki away like this when they just formed the bond, but it'd be so much worse if he let things continue. He'll find a way to fix this--for Todoroki's sake. There's no way Todoroki would ever want a failure like Izuku as a mate, anyway. Freeing him from this bond would be the best thing he could do at this point.] I can't answer that...

[glaciers]

[If Midoriya won't answer, than the only thing that would make sense is that he isn't wanted. He's an omega who has an alpha who wants nothing to do with him. He pulls all the way in on himself for a moment before shuddering.

He can't cry here. Not in front of this alpha. Not in front of somebody he thought of as a best friend. Tears prick his eyes as he roughly wipes them away. Turning from Izuku he gets up and starts gathering his clothes, slipping them on.]

You don't want me.

That's fine. [His voice breaks on fine. It most assuredly is not. This feeling of betrayal is so much worse- is it because they're a bonded pair?]

[inheritance]

[Hearing the emotion in Todoroki's voice hurts more than he could've imagined. He hates this, knowing that he's the one who put Todoroki in this position in the first place, the one who's hurting him now.

His eyes are still closed, but he can hear Todoroki moving around the room. The tears slip out, rolling down his cheeks. Izuku keeps his eyes closed, not wanting to see Todoroki leave.]

I'm sorry...

[It'll be fine, he tells himself. Todoroki's just caught up in the new bond--once he finds a way to break it, he'll be relieved to be free of Izuku.]

[glaciers]

[ Shouto stands next to the door, not looking back. If he had, he would've broken down crying. Not today. Not right now. Shouto can't deal with Izuku who wants nothing to do with him.

Even if he leaves the bond mark means he's pulled into Izuku's orbit unless he makes a concentrated effort to keep away. ]

If you don't want me that much, find a way to break the bond.

[ With that he slips out the door.

Is this what heartbreak feels like? ]
