[There's a new treat Hunk's made in the kitchen. He'd left from helping Pidge the evening before take apart--quite literally, thank goodness he could actually pop these things open--a strange piece of galra tech they'd taken from the last trip, and while they've had the afternoon free the next day, he knows she hasn't slept, or even left that room.
While Shiro and Coran seemed worried about this, Hunk just shrugs it off; after all, this isn't the first time Pidge has lost track of time slaving over technology. He'd already moved in a pillow and extra blankets into the room for such cases, he can only hope this poor kid at least considered a powernap. But, seeing as he hadn't seen Pidge at breakfast that morning too, he opts to go find the littlest paladin, with a few things in tow.
First, a bowl of food goo, tasting oddly of chicken soup despite the texture. Coran had gotten creative, and Hunk actually appreciated this attempt. Then, next to it, a product of Hunk's own experimentation--two small cups of different goo, one a strange brownish red, the other almost bluish; the blue one is sweet, almost like cake, but the brownish one? To him, and to his taste-tester Keith, it tasted a lot like peanut butter. But now he knows it needs to pass the expert of that category.
He lets himself back in, looking around.] Hey Pidge, you work up an appetite yet?
[As Hunk might have expected, Pidge just grunts in reply as she continues examining the wires inside the piece of tech they've salvaged. Her laptop's open and ready to be hooked up to it, though it hasn't been just yet.
Without really hearing what Hunk's just asked her, Pidge mutters, distracted.] Hold on, give me a second. I almost had it just now.
[What kind of answer is that? Hunk just sighs, figuring it means she's been at this for quite a while. He knows she's focused on... whatever she's stopped with, so he figures he'll offer his services until she breaks through. Setting the tray next to her, he kneels down.]
[Finally, she looks up from her work. After blinking at him--huh, when did he get here?--and adjusting her glasses, Pidge flashes him a grin.]
Hunk, good timing. I need a second pair of hands. [Apparently she hadn't really been paying attention until now, focused as she was on the scrap of tech.]
Hold these two wires for me while I hook this thing up to my laptop.
[Wow, she really is focused. Hunk wishes he had it in him to just pick her up and drag her away more often, but she looks so eager to finish this... Well, faster she finishes, faster she eats. He nods, fingers carefully plucking both wires from the smaller whiz.]
Pidge, after you get this hooked up though, you're gonna have to eat, okay?
[But even as he says this, he's already checking the wires, eyes following them back down to the tech to look at her handiwork. He's getting himself distracted from his mission.]
[She flaps a hand distractedly in his direction.] Yeah, sure.
It shouldn't take too long. Besides, I ate something this morning. [Her stomach chooses that exact moment to voice its complaint--loudly. Pidge pauses, her fingers hovering over the keyboard.] Okay, maybe I lost track of time a little.
[Hunk just fixes her with a displeased look, doubly so at the sound of her rumbling stomach. So she is hungry, which isn't even a surprise, but now she's at least aware of it.]
I think by 'this morning', you meant yesterday. Pidge, one of these days you're gonna fall asleep and shock yourself.
[She frowns when she spots the tray nearby, glancing between it and the screen in front of her. Has she really been working that long? Not like she isn't used to it, though.]
Okay, Hunk, I get it. [Shaking her head, Pidge gives him an exasperated look.] I promise I'll eat once this is done. Happy?
[Well, no wonder it's causing her trouble. Hunk watches her work with a sigh, though his own eyes drift over to the device.] Does it just start sparking when you put any energy to it? Maybe there's something getting crossed over in the wires.
I think there was some of that druid magic mixed in with the tech this time. It's just a theory, but the magic must have been interfering with my scan earlier.
[When she finally tears her eyes away from the screen, fingers pausing on her keyboard, it's to give Hunk a confident smirk. There's just something incredibly satisfying about cracking the challenges that Galra tech usually presents her with.] Anyway, I think I figured out how to get around it.
[There's a low whistle.] Druid magic in this thing?
[It makes sense, he figures, despite it being a hard thing to stop, or even test. The magic in space is definitely amazing, but so is trying to understand it. He's definitely impressed with her findings; Pidge has a knack for picking up the most interesting bits of info, outside of just being a genius overall. Already, he's curious.]
What do you think I've been working on this whole time?
[Jerking a thumb toward the tech in his hands, Pidge just beams.]
I isolated the part that has the magic residue--if that's what it is--and redirected the wiring that used to be connected to it. Anyway, let's see if this thing works. Ready?
[There's smart, and then there's Pidge. It's not just because he's supportive of all of his friends, Hunk is honest to goodness impressed with this little genius before him. He stares at her in awe, almost sparkling.]
Oh wow, Pidge, you're awesome!
[But is he ready? Well. He looks down, then nods. Even if it fails, it won't be the first time he's electrocuted himself in here.] Just tell me when.
[There's something about Hunk's awe that warms her, making her grin.] Now that, I already knew. [He gets a quick, playful nudge of the shoulder.] You're not so bad yourself, Hunk.
[And now, back to work. As she turns her attention back to her laptop, her expression turns serious. Her hands stay poised over the keyboard.]
[He has to chuckle at that nudge, beaming. Pidge is just great. But he's more than fired up and ready to work when she gives the signal, and touches the two tips together... and his eyes widen a little at the initial spark. He mouths his little mantra--please don't shock me again, please don't shock me again--and hope it works.]
